Marie Leszczynska

(1703-1768)
   queen of France
Marie Leszczynska was born in Breslau, Poland, the daughter of stanislaus i Leszcynski, king of Poland, and Queen Marie. Married to louis XV of France (1725), she bore 10 children, seven of whom survived, and was the grandmother of louis XVI. Of a retiring nature and disposition, she made no attempt to rival the king's mistresses (Mme de pompadour, Mme du barry). Marie Leszczynska's marriage facilitated French involvement in the war of the Polish Succession (1733-35). After her father renounced his throne (Treaty of Vienna, 1738), he received the duchies of Bar and Lorraine and established his court in France at Lunéville and, especially, at Nancy.
